After a week's layoff, Sunday marked the return of the LiQ. With record-setting numbers expected, those expectations were tempered by a few players calling in sick the morning of the game. That being said, we still ended up with 9 players, and the competition was tight. The game also marked the debut of Al L., a veteran of ice and roller hockey whose expertise added firepower to the team lead by goaltender, Mike M, and what should be considered a debut by Ron B whose absence from the LiQ was sorely missed. Mike returned to his spot in the crease for the first time in five months. The three-game series began with the most competitive of the three games. Mike's team took off to a quick lead in
GAME 1, but after a goal by Rob M. on a board pass from Igor N., and a deflection goal off of defender Brad V. by Igor N., the Garys took control of the play. The Mikes lead a valiant push at the end of the game with the pulling of their goaltender, but Igor N. capped off the game with an empty netter to seal the deal for the Garys 5-3.
GAME 2 was the polar opposite of the first game. The Mikes got off to a very quick and significant lead with a 4 goal first period, lead by Brad V. who potted 3 goals in the first alone, along with 4 assists by Joe B. The Garys had an early push in the 2nd period to cut the lead down to 2, but goals by Ron B and Joe B pushed the Mikes to an insurmountable lead. While Mike M did not receive much rubber in the goal, for the times when he was tested he was quite sharp and any signs of rust weren't visible. Gary M also posted a valiant effort and made some key, circus style goals that kept his team in the game, but in the end, the game ended with a 7-3 final.
GAME 3 began with a period that both goalies will likely want to forget. The skaters of the LiQ decided to break out their bag of tricks in this period. Rob M scored on a nifty deflection that redirected the puck to the complete opposite side of the goal, Igor N. capped off an end-to-end rush with a water bottle shaking shot just, tucked in just under the crossbar. On the Mike's side, Brad V. tapped in an easy garbage goal, created by the slick between-the-legs passing of Joe B., Ron B. created a number of scoring chances using his feet to redirect the puck this his striking teammates, and Brad V., scored a pretty goal from behind the goal line that left the opposing goaltender baffled. The circus antics of the first period settled and the two teams played a tight, yet exhausted game, but in the end the score remained the same as the Mikes defeated the Garys 7-3 to win the three game series.
