RECAP: November 27, 2016

After a week's layoff, Sunday marked the return of the LiQ. With record-setting numbers expected, those expectations were tempered by a few players calling in sick the morning of the game. That being said, we still ended up with 9 players, and the competition was tight. The game also marked the debut of Al L., a veteran of ice and roller hockey whose expertise added firepower to the team lead by goaltender, Mike M, and what should be considered a debut by Ron B whose absence from the LiQ was sorely missed.  Mike returned to his spot in the crease for the first time in five months. The three-game series  began with the most competitive of the three games. Mike's team took off to a quick lead in GAME 1, but after a goal by Rob M. on a board pass from Igor N., and a deflection goal off of defender Brad V. by Igor N., the Garys took control of the play. The Mikes lead a valiant push at the end of the game with the pulling of their goaltender, but Igor N. capped off the game with an empty netter to seal the deal for the Garys 5-3. GAME 2 was the polar opposite of the first game. The Mikes got off to a very quick and significant lead with a 4 goal first period, lead by Brad V. who potted 3 goals in the first alone, along with 4 assists by Joe B. The Garys had an early push in the 2nd period to cut the lead down to 2, but goals by Ron B and Joe B pushed the Mikes to an insurmountable lead. While Mike M did not receive much rubber in the goal, for the times when he was tested he was quite sharp and any signs of rust weren't visible. Gary M also posted a valiant effort and made some key, circus style goals that kept his team in the game, but in the end, the game ended with a 7-3 final. GAME 3 began with a period that both goalies will likely want to forget. The skaters of the LiQ decided to break out their bag of tricks in this period. Rob M scored on a nifty deflection that redirected the puck to the complete opposite side of the goal, Igor N. capped off an end-to-end rush with a water bottle shaking shot just, tucked in just under the crossbar. On the Mike's side, Brad V. tapped in an easy garbage goal, created by the slick between-the-legs passing of Joe B., Ron B. created a number of scoring chances using his feet to redirect the puck this his striking teammates, and Brad V., scored a pretty goal from behind the goal line that left the opposing goaltender baffled. The circus antics of the first period settled and the two teams played a tight, yet exhausted game, but in the end the score remained the same as the Mikes defeated the Garys 7-3 to win the three game series.

RECAP: November 5th and 12th

Hallelujah! The LiQ arose from the dead for the first two official games of the Fall. For the first time in weeks, the league was able to get enough folks to play! And, for the first time in months, games were held on back-to-back weeks.  To say that the players suffered from rust would be an understatement, however the games were all hotly contested.  Please find the rosters for each of those weeks below.

RECAP: September 3rd, 2016

This first game of September featured the return of cool weather and the return of the LiQ. The games were heavy on close competition and physicality.  The featured goalies in this tilt were Gary M. and Craig M.  Gary was in his usual form and played a solid 3 games.  Rust seemed to be the main culprit as to why Craig's team was over-matched, even when their team featured an extra player to be used as a substitute. The physicality featured in the game also played its own part.  Gary's team's defensive specialist, James S. blocked a plethora of shots to aid his goalkeeper.  He also featured in a collision early in Game #3, which knocked Craig's team's forward Brad V. out of the game for the entirety of the second period. He would return in the 3rd and score a goal, but he was obviously not playing at 100%. Despite this, Craig's team able to edge Gary's team in Game #2 with a shutdown 3rd period which featured very few shots on goal for a 5-3 win.  Gary's team however, dominated in Game #1 with a 7-3 victory, and held off a late push from Craig's team in Game #3 for a 5-3 victory. The one-two punch of Igor N. and Rob M. was nearly impossible to control. Igor peppered Craig with shots and on a number of occasions Rob was able to pot the rebounds into the vacant areas of the goal.

AUGUST 13 & 14: NO GAME THIS WEEKEND

Due to excessive heat, there will be no games scheduled for this weekend. We hope to see everyone next week.

RECAP: August 8th, 2016

Sunday August 8th marked the debut of three new members of the LiQ. The game featured 10 players and with team names not being a necessity just yet, the team lead by Gary in goal took home the day's series with 2 wins. Both games remained close through two periods, but as the heat beat down on the teams and exhaustion set in, it was Gary's team that was able to outlast mother nature's barrage. The "Garys'" scoring was spearheaded by a gutsy performance by Carlos who used his size to his advantage to overtake the slightly smaller team lead by Mike in goal. The third period of both games saw a collapse by the "Mikes" as exhaustion set in, but little of the blame falls on their goaltender. Mike was exceptional, particularly in the first period of game 2, in which he stood on his head to make a number of breathtaking saves. All in all, the rookies performed exceptionally in their respective debuts, but in the end there has to be in a winner and this week, the Garys took home the victory.
